4 Tips for Decorating Childrens’ Rooms

Let your creativity shine bright with a hint of practicality

August 3, 2021 | by Janet Alyinovich

By definition, a kid’s room needs to be fun. So, how do you incorporate your child’s personality into a cute or cozy space that still allows for functionality and tasks such as homework to thrive? It’s easy with these four tips I always incorporate while designing kids’ rooms for our Darvin customers.

Style Matters – A Lot!
I know, in the big picture designing functionality is what we are talking about – but an inviting and cool-looking place to hang out never kept any kid from frequenting a space in the home. Distinct design that reflects interests and a child’s personality goes a long way to getting them to sit down (or stand up) at the desk to do homework.

The easiest way to create this distinction is to feature colors, textures and patterns to create something that is all your child’s world. Don’t be shy, this is a kid’s room, they like loud, they like bright, they embrace fun! Seek out dynamic accents as a starting point with the thought you may be changing them in a few years as your child matures.

2. ‘Simple’ is a Real Goal
It’s easy to go overboard with bright colors and distinct styles when creating a kid’s room. There’s also a lot to be said for keeping things simple. If budget is a factor (when isn’t it?), consider buying flexible furniture and simply changing the accents and paint color as your child grows up.

3. Define the Study Area
Whenever space allows, even if it is a shared corner of the room, allocate space in your design for a designated study/desk area. Knowing there is a designated place to be creative will help build a connection between your child and their own space.

4. Think Independence, Accessibility & Function
When designing your child’s bedroom, always keep accessibility in mind because anything within their reach, like storage bins and toy baskets, will encourage independent play. This will also help teach clean-up responsibilities. Look for furniture with built-in functionality. Beds with bookcase headboards, storage footboards, built-in charging stations, nightlights and laptop stands, are just a few of the cool options available that will make your kids love their spaces.
